Zero Waste Fashion Seeks Public Attention

A new trend is now emerging in the fashion world and it is focused on one of the hot issues of the day: reducing waste in order to help maintain a more stable environment. This follows along with organic tee shirts, hanging clothes to dry and recycling clothing – popular trends that have been developing for several decades, but are not technically a part of high fashion. Now, things are changing, especially in the United States where the enviro conscious movement is really taking off in recent years. The so called green movement is gathering speed and a brand new fashion forward trend has come to the fore: zero waste fashion. This is a new concept that involves fashion schools at the top of the fashion echelon in the US and is all about striving to get rid of the excess waste left on the fabric room floors as clothes are cut from patterns. The idea is to keep the amount of waste scraps to a minimum by designing in such a way that very little fabric is left over after the process of producing the clothing is complete.

Instead of being an avant garde type movement, the goal once reached will literally eliminate millions of tons of waste fabric that typically fills landfills each year. The stats show that between 15 and 20 per cent of all material cut to create clothing today ends up as waste – something that would be unacceptable in many other industries as a loss of money. Since it is cheaper to dump than recycle, the fashion industry is trying this zero waste fashion approach to try and save time, effort and money.
