Political relations between South Korea and Japan haven’t always been good but some well known Korean designers are willing to put their differences aside to aid the ailing country. As Seoul Fashion Week came a close, organizers announced that nearly $15,000 was donated in order to benefit the victims of the recent rash of disasters in Japan.
All proceeds of a charity event that took place at the end of the week were donated to Japan. In total, more than 130 separate pieces were donated by various Korean designers and 1,000 participants bid or made offers on the fashions that were featured. Although other countries have donated money to the victims of the Japanese disasters, so far this is the first time that a group of fashion designer from Asia have held a charitable event.
Among the fashion designers that participated, Lie Sang-bong was the most vocal. Several major beauty company also donated products, and coupon website Groupon also teamed up with the Korean fashion designers. More than 60 designers lent a helping hand, and in the end the organizers of Seoul Fashion Week felt that both the show as well as the charitable events were a huge success. Some designers have vowed to continue their efforts while others are said to be hard at work on their next lines. The money collected will be used to help Japanese survivors get access to clean food and water, shelter and also assist them in reuniting with their missing and displaced loved ones.
